Lythos™ Digital Impression System Proves User-Centered Design Is Good Business
BOSTON, Feb. 12, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Orthodontic experiences are a little less unpleasant, thanks in part to The Lythos™ Digital Impression System, which recently earned a 2013 GOOD DESIGN™ Award. Innovation and design consultancy Altitude worked with Ormco, a leading manufacturer and provider of advanced orthodontic technology and services, to harness the potential of 3-D digital modeling and user-centered design to bring a breakthrough system to market.
The Lythos System avoids the process of making physical molds and impressions of teeth – a practice that's uncomfortable for the patient and time-consuming for the orthodontist. Instead, the compact and ergonomic system captures a digital orthodontic scan that allows orthodontists to prescribe and adjust braces more effectively.
"There are so many small innovations that make the success of this system – the portability, the disposable plastic sheath for affordable FDA-approved hygiene, the flexible interface to fit into any orthodontic station, an ergonomic design that meets precision optical alignment requirements. But at the end of the day, it's the entire experience that makes the system shine," said Daniel Ostrower, Altitude CEO. "True innovation requires breaking the mold – in this case, quite literally."
Since its launch in 2013, The Lythos Digital Impression System has hit the market with great success in the orthodontic community, shipping over 100 systems in North America in less than two months.
The most successful Altitude projects tackle the challenge of complex systems – especially those that need to meet layers of user experience needs, commercialize complex technology, and hit a tight window to reach the market successfully.
