Snow, ice forces some riders to stand in the street

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

The problems some people face because sidewalks aren't shoveled was shown perfectly when someone tweeted a picture of Kansas City bus riders forced to stand in the street to wait because their bus stop wasn't cleared.

It's not just an inconvenience, it's also dangerous.

"Honey, I can't do that. I just can't walk on that," said Shirley Hampshire, pointing to a sheet of ice.

Hampshire, 71, was spotted literally standing in the street near 57th Street and Troost Avenue. She said, for her, it was the lesser of two evils.

"For anyone trying to get on the bus, you're afraid you're going to wipe out on that and it's slick sometimes," she said.

It was so slick that Jerome and Kimberly Roberts chose to walk about an extra block to wait for their ride. They said they just needed a place to stand.

"They need to clear them off because somebody could get hurt. That's how people slip up under these buses," Jerome Roberts said.

All over town people can see similar snow-covered bus stops. Three are easily visible near the intersection of 63rd Street and Blue Ridge Cutoff.

Cindy Baker with the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority said KCATA is addressing the problem.

"I think all of the heaviest corridor rider ship routes are in pretty good shape but, with 5,000 bus stops, Mother Nature may have to take care of them before we get there," she said.

Baker said, after focusing on heavy rider ship routes, KCATA focused on transfer hubs, hiring two additional contractors to assist the seven crews already working to clear away the snow from the stops. Baker said they've received few complaints, but the group wants to hear from people who have spotted bad bus stops.

"We are at this point really putting a priority on those that customers call and tell us about," she said.

If you have a problem with a bus route in your area, you can email KCATA at metro@kcata.org.
