EDWARDSVILLE, KS (KCTV) -

A man died Monday after he was crushed by a tree in Edwardsville.

Robert Freeman, 68, man died at the scene.

It appears to be a large tree that was being cut down when it fell. This occurred about 5:50 p.m. in the 1500 block of South 98th Street just south of Swartz Road.

He ducked and curled up into a fetal position, but was suffocated after the tree came down.

Neighbors said the man did not live in the area but often came through looking for wood. A chainsaw was found next to the tree.

The property owner had given Freeman permission to chuck wood.

"It's a sad situation," said Deborah Wilson, who lives in the area. "I feel really sorry for the family that has to go through this."
