LOS ANGELES (KCBS/KCAL/CNN) - A coffee shop billing itself as "Dumb Starbucks" has opened in California, attracting big crowds with free coffee. It's calling itself a parody of the real Starbucks.
The shop opened its doors this weekend in L.A. and the baristas gave away free coffee until they ran out, according to news reports.
Located in a strip mall next to a laundromat, the shop reportedly mimics the Starbucks menu, but places the word "dumb" in front of every product.
Its origins and owner are a mystery. The manager wouldn't speak and the baristas weren't much help with any answers, saying they answered a wanted ad.
"It's all about the coffee at the end of the day. It's all about getting caffeinated and putting a smile on people's faces," one barista said.
A flyer explains it's a legit coffee house, but is calling itself parody art to skirt trademark laws and use the Starbucks name and logo for marketing reasons.
The concept's already spawning knock-offs.
One person wrote, "Genius! I'm about to open a dumb McDonald's."
The real Starbucks said, it's confirmed the store isn't one of theirs and it's looking into the matter.
