(CNN) - The very first gold medal won at the Sochi Olympics belongs to an unlikely athlete.
He's American Sage Kotsenburg, 20, and he won it in snowboarding.
Kotsenburg tells us the defining moment when it all sunk in that he won.
"It was definitely when they put the medal around my neck, and the anthem and the flag going up the pole," Kotsenburg said. "And just being on top of the podium. I was like really this is happening."
