Man charged with murder in woman's motel death

A 25-year-old man has been charged in the recent murder of a woman who was found in a motel room.

Kansas City police were called about 9 a.m. Feb. 1 to the America's Best Value Inn & Suite, located at 3240 Broadway, in regard to an ambulance call.

When officers arrived, they contacted the front desk employee who advised that he received a noise complaint in regard to room and discovered a woman dead in a shower.

The victim's death was ruled a homicide by the Jackson County Medical Examiner's Office.

Court records state that during the course of the investigation a business card was located in the trash can of the victim's room. The name "Paul Simmons" was handwritten on the back of the business card.

After a computer check of the name, Simmons was discovered, police say. In addition, Simmons' description was similar to those observed on the surveillance video.

The surveillance video shows the suspect checking in with the victim and going in and out of the victim's room, court records state.

Police say a check of Simmons' Facebook page of also revealed a photograph of him wearing a hat identical to the hat worn by the suspect in surveillance video.

Simmons' fingerprints were checked against those discovered inside the motel room and it was confirmed that he was indeed inside the victim's room, according to a probable cause statement.

Simmons was arrested Feb. 9.  Prosecutors have requested a bond of $250,000.
