The petition stated, "When it was explained to Daiquiri Factory why the drink name might be extremely offensive, particularly to survivors of sexual assault, they claimed that it wasn't a big deal, wasn't "meant to offend," and that they had no intention of changing it. Even in the face of in-person protests from actual survivors."
Taylor Malone, who launched and organized the effort to boycott the bar, said "Every year over 100,000 people are the victims of date rape. Alcohol is involved in 90 percent of those. Ignoring the reality of rape and creating an environment where it's seen as a joke only serves to perpetuate rape culture. It allows date rape to continue in silence, and it shames victims and survivors everywhere."
The bar has no plans to drop the name from the menu. The owners, instead, have chosen to defend the name.
"Many have asked us.. The inspiration for the Signature Date Grape Koolaid Daiquiri. (besides it being simply the ingredients of the Daiquiri...) No one seems to feel the need to look up the phrase Date Grape.. in the Urban Dictionary. (no one did a fact check.. just twisted the meaning all together... add that with a Out of State owned media company KXLY 4 News Group (who also owns a radio station that competes with our sister company #1045JAMZ).. They felt that running a slanderous story by a source that they did not fact check on.. which started this media firestorm, to cover up that mistake.. continued to report on the story yesterday on all newscasts.. to get all sides of the story... For The Protesters, you simply had it all wrong.. now if you want to go into the technical debate about what a grape or wine is.. then your stretching way to far.. for the record here is a Urban Dictionairy: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=date-grape In the meantime.. We will open Thursday and continue to serve our 15 Flavors of Daiquiris without delay to those who do understand.. this was a blown out of proportion deal.. done for other reasons.. blurred lines indeed!"
People have taken to the bar's Facebook page in support of and against the drink name.
Charissa Gage said, "Yup! all the crybabies r driving me crazy over this drink name!! While it will prob be the first damn flavor i try! haha People always need something to complain about,,they will find something new ina week or so"
Ashley Bee wrote, "You try to play the victim by saying that the media put the whole 'date rape' thing into peoples heads when in reality, people came to YOU first and asked you to change the name of the drink due to its hidden meaning. Instead of listening to potential customers, you decided to ignore and make fun of them. I even read some great suggestions on what to change the name to, like The Grape Northwest. You had a great opportunity at your hands and you just tossed it out the window. People only began going to the media because of your terrible response."
Dane Latham looked at the name differently. He wrote, "They didn't make the drink about rape. The knee-jerk protesters are the ones who attached that label. Get over yourselves!!!! Find a REAL issue to protest, if you're going to protest something. Kudos to the owner for standing his ground in the face of such lame b***s***!"
"I just want to know who came up with this ridiculous name and why. It's not funny, clever, or cute in any way to anyone that has their head screwed on the right way. It's pretty damn disturbing actually," wrote Anita Dixit. "And actually, the only way you could have redeemed yourselves while selling this drink is donating the proceeds to a rape prevention or crisis center. Would you be willing to do that?"
