Two injured in Shawnee apartment fire

SHAWNEE, KS (KCTV) -

Residents in a Shawnee apartment building were forced into the snow after a fire Tuesday evening.

Crews responded at 11:35 p.m. to an apartment building at 6311 Cottonwood St. in Shawnee.

When firefighters arrived the found the bottom apartment of a three-story, multi-family apartment building on fire.

Firefighters battled the elements and the fire before declaring the fire under control just after midnight. The fire was contained to the bottom apartment and sustained significant damage.  Two apartments above the fire sustained minor damage.

Two residents from the building were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Shawnee firefighters were assisted by the Merriam Fire Department and Overland Park Fire Department.

Red Cross personnel were requested to assist with housing for displaced residents.

The fire is still under investigation.
