Long-awaited east KC grocery store opens Monday

Posted: Updated:

A new Aldi grocery store is opening Monday after a decade-long effort to bring more fresh food to the urban core.

The store is opening in the Prospect Corridor, an area considered to be a food desert.

It is estimated that one in seven Kansas Citians don't have enough to eat.  One reason is because many live in a food desert, and this Aldi is one solution to that problem at 39th Street and Prospect Avenue.

It is a big day for people living nearby, and a big day for Aldi too.

Mark Bersted, Aldi division vice president, said the store is going to offer so much relief and convenience to the community.

"As Aldi continues to grow in Kansas City, we are pleased to open this new location to help more customers stretch their dollars even further," Bersted said. "As important as price is, there's only one way to attract and keep shoppers: You have to have quality products. When people try our Aldi exclusive brands, they are surprised by the savings and impressed by the quality."

People living in the Prospect Corridor say they have to travel outside of the city, some traveling 2.5 hours by bus, to get fresh produce.

To celebrate the new store, Aldi will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Monday.  The public is invited to attend, sample products, tour the store and shop.

Additionally, guests can enter an on-site sweepstakes for a chance to win Aldi gift certificates.

The Kansas City location will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. The grocery store accepts cash, debit and EBT cards.

Aldi has nearly 1,300 stores located in 32 states. Over the last several years, they have added, on average, 80 new stores each year.
