KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

The Major Case Squad is investigating a homicide after firefighters found a woman's body inside a burning home.

Crime scene investigators are searching for evidence that was not destroyed by the fire that started inside a home off South 14th Street and Kansas Avenue.

Someone called 911 to report the fire about 2 a.m. Monday.

As firefighters put out the flames, they found the body of a woman inside the home. Detectives took a look at the body and immediately determine it was a homicide.

"I don't know the exact circumstances of what they saw when they went inside. Obviously, it was enough to say we need to investigate this as a homicide," Tomasic said.

Police say the fire started on the back side of the home on the main level.  They are trying to determine if the fire was intentionally set.

"Trying to identify the subject that is in there. Our CSI guys will go in there and try to locate any evidence to help us out with this case and hopefully track down witnesses to help us find out who she is and what happened," Kansas City, KS, Police Department spokesman Officer Tom Tomasic said.

Investigators also want to know why the woman was inside the vacant home.

"The home was unfit, unoccupied, no one was living there. I don't know how long it has been unoccupied, but it is empty," Tomasic said.
