ROELAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -

Police in Roeland Park are working to determine the identity of a body found in a wooded area, but that may be difficult because of the condition of the body.

Police removed a badly decayed body about 9 p.m. Sunday in the 4800 block of Roe Avenue.

The area is just down the hill from the Boulevard Apartments.  The discovery comes as a shock to those who live here.

Bruce Edwards moved into his unit inside that complex about a year and a half ago.

"It is quiet. Lots of families here. It is a nice neighborhood," he said.

His brother, Bob, came over to watch the Super Bowl, but it was not the game that got their attention.  It was the body discovered less than 200 feet from their doorstep.

"I heard there was a body down there, and when I came down here about 3 p.m., the police were already there," he said.

Police say investigators can't say yet whether the body is that of a man or woman.  They can't identify the person's race or age either.

A medical examiner will have to determine who the person was and how he or she died.

For Edwards and his brother, the mystery is unsettling.

"I don't know. That's really shocking because apparently that is really close to my apartment," Edwards said.

A woman who went missing in early December lived in the apartment complex just up the hill from where the body was discovered, but police can't say whether there is a connection without further investigation.
