KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
More than 100 students at a Kansas City school banded together to help a fellow classmate and principal battling cancer.
It began with just one snip and 123 students at St. Teresa's Academy donated more than 82 feet of hair.
"I think it's so amazing that so many people would do this. I've felt a ton of support from St. Teresa's. All my friends and teachers have been so great about everything. This is just overwhelming," said freshman Madi Winfield.
Madi has been fighting Hodgkin's Lymphoma since November.
"I started losing my hair early December, it started slow, then came really quickly," she said.
Before it was gone Madi donated some of her hair too, even though she prefers a hat to a wig.
"It is one of the most incredible things I've ever seen in my life. I am so blessed to be part of a community this giving. I'm so amazed by my peers and classmates willing to make this sacrifice," said Frances Neunuebel, a senior at the school and cancer survivor.
Neunuebel helped organize the massive haircut after hearing Madi and a St. Teresa's assistant principle were battling cancer. It's something she relates to.
"This is honestly incredible for me to see. Being a cancer patient I lost all my hair when I was 11, 12 and 13," Neunuebel said. "On top of being in middle school, not being at school and having all these new things thrown at me, I didn't have anything normal in my life anymore."
Giving that feeling of normal is why students like Abbey Haines volunteered to get a new look.
"I just love the fact that I have this opportunity to give something to other people," she said.
All the hair is donated to the Pantene Beautiful Lengths project that gives free wigs to women like Madi in cancer treatment.
"It was insane because, you know, hair is a really important thing to girls, definitely," Madi said.
Each of the 123 St. Teresa's Academy students participating Friday was also encouraged to invite a friend to cut her ponytail off. That meant almost 250 girls simultaneously participated in the event.
