SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

The American Heart Association announced the 2014 Go Red Leading Ladies of Western Massachusetts Friday evening with a poster unveiling at the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield.

Each of the 12 women, now known as Go Red Ambassadors, took their photo with the poster, which will be used to raise awareness for women's heart disease.

The AHA said heart disease is the leading cause of death of women in the United States.

"It's important that women understand how to manage their health, how to eat right and take care of themselves. That way they can be sure to live a long and healthy life," said Janet Garcia, a newly inducted ambassador.

She will join her fellow ambassadors in empowering women around the community this year to reduce their risk of heart disease by learning the steps to prevent it.
