MERRIAM, KS (KCTV) -

A Shawnee man has been charged in the death of a 3-year-old girl, according to online court records.

Kham Khamchanh, 38, was charged Friday in Johnson County District Court with first-degree murder and abuse of a child.

His bond is set at $1 million.

Merriam police said they were investigating the death Yamarawit Sahle, or Yammy, after they were called to apartments on the 9900 block of West 51st Terrace on Jan. 9. Paramedics transported the girl to the hospital, but she later died.

Neighbors said a woman and her three children lived in the apartment with her boyfriend and the boyfriend is the man who now sits behind bars.

Neighbors who have talked to the little girl's biological father are in disbelief.

"We all up here are neighbors, family with a lot of kids," said Qabus Taha. "He said always, 'she's my angel.' Sure, I couldn't sleep. All the neighbors keep thinking about the girl because we know her."

Following the little girl's death, some of her organs were used to save the lives of others.

Her heart went to a 17-month-old boy from the Midwest who was diagnosed shortly after his birth with a serious condition that caused weakening of his heart muscle.

The girl's liver went to a 1-year-old boy from the Midwest who had a disease that caused his liver to fail.

The donations also gave a 42-year-old woman from the Midwest a second chance at life. The woman suffered a disease that caused her kidneys to fail. After being on dialysis treatment for over 11 years, the donation of both kidneys helped her to be released from the hospital in stable condition.
