Nashville fire investigators are still working to determine the cause of a two-alarm fire Thursday night at a vacant apartment building in the West End.
The fire at the Villa Louise apartments was reported about 9:15 p.m. It is the same complex that has been vacant since flooding caused by frozen pipes earlier this month.
Flames rekindled at the apartment building, located at 216 Louise Ave., about 1 a.m. Friday, bringing fire crews back to the scene for a second time in one night.
Nobody was injured in either fire, but damage was extensive.
"We had some collapse between the first and second floor," said Chuck Hoover, with the Nashville Fire Department.
The extreme cold in early January caused water lines to burst at the
apartment building, leaving many residents forced to move out of their
The fire department said contractors had been working in
the building just prior to the fire, and, at this time, investigators do
not suspect an intentional fire.
Many of the people who had been living at Villa Louise have found other apartments, like Amanda Casey and her husband.
"We found something in the area that's a little more expensive, but something we can handle," Casey said.
Villa Louise's insurance company is paying their moving and storage fees.
Still, some people had hoped to return to Villa Louise after the flooding clean-up.
Mary Giglio and her son expected their stay in a hotel would only last a couple of months, but Villa Louise paid the hotel bill through the January 27.
"Management told us at that point that we would be well taken care of," Giglio said.
Now, the fire makes a quick return to Villa Louise seem unlikely.
"I feel really bad for the people who were planning on going back there. That was a community that many people really connected with," Casey said.
The property manager said they're waiting to hear from the fire marshal and their insurance company before knowing what happens next.
A building permit on file at the Codes Department says that a Nashville company called TriStar Construction was doing the remodeling. Channel 4 News called but did not hear back from the company on Friday.
