Lee's Summit police K-9 dies from intestinal cancer

LEE'S SUMMIT, MO (KCTV) -

One of Lee's Summit Police Department's two patrol dogs died last weekend from intestinal cancer, the department said Wednesday morning.

Jax, the canine partner and family member of officer Scott McMilian, was a 6-year-old dark-coated German Sheppard.

He was trained to provide a specialized police presence in the community and assist other officers in the performance of their duties.

"Jax presence will surely be missed by those officers who worked closely with him, and the positive impact he provided in keeping our community safe," the department said in a written statement.

McMilian and Jax hit the streets in August 2009 and were the fifth K-9 unit for the Lee's Summit Police Department since the first unit was activated in 1992.
