Dogs recovering after severe neglect by owner

MISSION, KS (KCTV) -

Two dogs are recovering after nearly dying from severe neglect.

The dogs were severely neglected by their overwhelmed owner who finally called an animal support group for help. Because of the condition of Nora and Frankie, Love 4 Paws Rescue was called to help the dogs who are now recovering at Dearborn Animal Clinic in Mission.

Photos show the dogs after they were found in the woman's basement in deplorable condition.

WARNING: Some KCTV5 viewers may find the images and details disturbing.

"The female dog, Nora, was found on the basement floor. They thought she was dead. The male, Frankie, was in a cage with a chain on his neck with urine and feces covering the bottom of the cage," said Stephanie Henshaw of Love 4 Paws.

A veterinarian said that one of the dogs had injuries similar to bed sores in humans. That indicates that the frail dog was likely lying on the floor for weeks. Nora needed surgery to remove dead tissue.

"I don't know how much longer they could have gone on the way they were," said Dr. Jim Guglielmino, a vet at Dearborn.

He said the dogs will survive but were really hurt and nearly died.

"These dogs should have gotten help a long time ago. It's inexcusable," Henshaw said. "These dogs have suffered and endured far more than they ever should have had to and she could have asked for help a long time ago. Instead, she avoided the situation until it was almost too late."

Because Nora and Frankie's owner did seek help and agreed not to have any more animals, no charges will be filed.

Rescue groups say they are seeing more and more cases in which owners cannot care for their dogs, and the economy is believed to be a contributing factor.
