EUDORA, KS (KCTV) -

High winds fueled grass fires Sunday along Kansas 10 just outside of Eudora.

Drivers unexpectedly had to change their routes as flames enveloped both sides of the road, shutting down the highway.

A mile-long wall of fire took drivers and nearby residents, like Joe Arneson, by surprise.

"I was looking for my cat, actually, and happened to open the door.  I happened to look through the door and saw the fire to the south of us," Arneson said.

The fire sparked from one of Arneson's neighbors who says he was cleaning up a small bonfire when a massive gust of wind carried embers to a nearby field.

It was a scary situation for those in the several houses that surround the dry farmland as the 50 mph wind gusts fed the flames.

"We were sitting here when that wind come up. And we thought, 'what in the world was that?' That wind was so strong. That kind of startled us to start with," Arneson said.

Also contributing to the fire were the abnormally dry conditions.  Red flag warnings have recently been posted, but not on Sunday because winds weren't expected to pick up until the evening.

No injuries were reported.
