That will be a shock for much of the Midwest. In Kansas City, MO, the high temperature Sunday was expected to be 60 while Monday's high is forecast to be only 15.
KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV/AP) -
An unusual weather pattern that drives air from the Arctic Circle south will send temperatures plummeting in the metro, and leave a huge swath of the country colder than Alaska.
The huge drop in temperature is expected overnight Sunday.
"We're talking almost a 45-degree drop from this afternoon's high temperature of 58 degrees to Monday's high of only 15 degrees. That cold air up to the north of us in Canada is headed our way tonight," KCTV5 meteorologist Hallie Shulman said.
With the passage of the cold front, there is enough moisture where the metro could see a few flurries Sunday evening.
"We'll keep our precipitation chances around 20 percent between 7 p.m. and midnight," Shulman said.
Along with the huge temperature drop, the metro will be battling gusty winds as well. With cold temperatures and gusty winds, the wind chill will also be a factor.
A wind chill advisory has been posted for all counties north of Kansas City, where wind chills could drop as low as minus 20 degrees by Monday morning. The rest of the area will see wind chills well below zero throughout Monday.
Mike Hudson of the National Weather Service says the wind chill will make Minneapolis feel like minus 43 degrees Monday morning - far colder than the minus 4 degrees it will feel like in the nation's northernmost city of Barrow, AK.
The cold will stick around through at least the first part of the work week with temperatures moderating by Wednesday.
The area's next chance for any precipitation will arrive towards the end of the work week.
