A woman in an Overland Park apartment complex went to do her laundry and was attacked.
It happened at the Park Apartments near 78th and Riley streets and police are investigating it as an attempted sexual assault. The suspect has not been caught.
"It's pretty scary. I just moved here not too long ago and it's kind of concerning," Austin Garvey said.
A violent attack at the apartments over the weekend isn't sitting well with residents, especially those who were just hearing on Tuesday about what happened.
"We didn't know anything (about) it. What if something happened to us? We weren't going to know anything," Guadalupe Rayon said.
Police are warning residents to use extra caution and avoid doing laundry late at night or alone.
Just after 11 p.m. on Saturday the victim called 911 and said she'd been attacked in the laundry room by a man she'd never seen before.
"She was struck in the side of the face by a male who punched her. And when she regained her composure, she turned around and he had a knife. He was pulling at her clothes, trying to pull her shirt out, tugging at her waistband. So we believe the attack was sexual in nature," said Officer Gary Mason.
The woman fought the man off until he ran away, but so far police have no suspects. Residents say the laundry rooms are located in each building, and are open to the public. One tenant said it's not uncommon to find people who do not live at the apartments sleeping in the area.
"I've only been in there once and they're not really the most area to me. It's in a little tunnel and it's kind of an awkward area," Garvey said.
Management did not call KCTV5 back to explain why tenants weren't told of the attack. Police ask that anyone with information about the incident call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
