Cleveland police have made an arrest in the shooting death of a little girl on the city's west side.

32-year-old Geoffrey Gurkovich was arrested without incident in Newburgh Heights with the assistance of Cleveland Police.

According to police, Gurkovich went to the location over a verbal dispute. However, the Brooks family was not the target.

"The Brooks family was not the intended target at all. They happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time," said Chief Michael McGrath.

Jermani Brooks, 5, and her mother, Noni, 33, were both shot in the head as they sat in an SUV in the 12800 block of Crossburn Avenue. Jermani was killed and Noni remains hospitalized in good condition.

Two other children were in the SUV at the time of the shooting. They were not injured.

Noni's boyfriend, who police believe may have been the intended target, was inside the Crossburn Avenue home.

According to police, the gunman exited a green SUV and fired multiple shots into the victim's SUV. After the shooting, the suspect fled the scene in the green SUV.

McGrath tells 19 Action News that Gurkovich's girlfriend got into an altercation with Brooks' boyfriend earlier that night. Investigators believe the suspect went to the Crossburn Avenue home looking for him.

There will be a vigil for Noni and Jermani Brooks on Thursday. It is the day the little girl would have turned 6-years-old.

"It was a very tragic incident when you have a five year old murdered in our city. We don't take these things lightly. We don't take any murders lightly," said Chief Michael McGrath.

If you would like to help with 5-year old's funeral expenses you can make a donation at any Key Bank. A fund has been set up in the name of Jermani Brooks.
