'American Idol' hopeful from North Plains advances to next round

NORTH PLAINS, OR (KPTV) -

A 16-year-old student from North Plains is headed to Hollywood on American Idol.

Caitlin Johnson said her mother, a former punk rock singer who toured with the band Black Flag, inspired her to try out for the show at auditions in San Francisco.

Johnson's talent at the auditions was good enough for the judges, and Jennifer Lopez gave her the coveted golden ticket.

"Auditioning for the judges today was terrifying," Johnson said. "I've never sang in front of anyone besides my family, so I was shaking. Thanks to J-Lo, she pushed me through. Harry didn't like it, hopefully I'll be able to prove something to him at Hollywood week."

Johnson said she hopes she'll someday have the confidence her mother had in her punk rock band.

"I ran out and I jumped on my family and they were so happy," Johnson said in an interview posted to American Idol's YouTube channel.

Watch American Idol on Wednesday on FOX 12 at 8 p.m.
