MERRIAM, KS (KCTV) -
A new retailer may soon break ground next door to the massive Ikea construction project in Merriam, KS.
Hobby Lobby could open up another store in the metro across the street from the Swedish retailer. The current side street of West 60th Terrace between IKEA Way and Slater Street could close for good if the store breaks ground.
Developers want to build the Hobby Lobby in between the Merriam city pool and just down the street from the QuikTrip on Johnson Drive.
The developers who proposed the Hobby Lobby project want to build a 55,000-square-foot store. They also hope to open a casual fast food restaurant in another smaller 5,000-square-foot building in between the Ikea and the Jack in the Box fast food restaurant that's located off Johnson Drive.
The company, DDR, submitted the Hobby Lobby and restaurant proposal to Merriam city leaders. DDR owns and manages 415 retail properties in the United States, Puerto Rico and Brazil.
Merriam's planning commission approved the project, making the properties the final pieces of the puzzle for the Merriam Village Development.
"The next step is for it to go to the city council which will be the last meeting in February, which is when the city council will take action on it," said Bryan Dyer, the community development director.
Just two miles from the proposed building area, off Johnson Drive, sits another Hobby Lobby in Mission, KS. It's unknown at this time what the proposed store could mean for the other location.
A spokesperson for Hobby Lobby said, "Hobby Lobby is unable to comment on any of the Kansas City-area stores" and said to check back with the company for more information in a month.
The 349,000-square-foot Ikea project is on schedule and should be open and ready by fall in time for Christmas shopping this year. Developers for the Hobby Lobby project hope to open right around the same time.
