The delivery of a new 480,000-pound power transformer is going to shut down two major Northland interstates, causing traffic detours and possible delays.
Kansas City Power & Light is moving the transformer from Liberty to the Nashua substation near Smithville.
The move will take place between 11 p.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. Friday.
Highway restrictions will begin as early as 7 p.m. to establish median crossovers, adjust traffic signal heads and raise overhead utility lines.
The massive load, consisting of 727,000 pounds, will include a pusher tractor, a puller tractor and a 36-axle trailer.
It will travel on Interstate-35 and Interstate-435, on Missouri 152 and U.S. 169 and local routes at times.
Officials expect to shut down I-35 from Highway 152 to Highway 291 in both directions for up to one and a half hours, and I-435 between Highway 152 and U.S. 169 Highway for up to four hours.
Traffic will detour to Highway 152 and U.S. 169 to bypass the closure.
MoDOT said because of the size of the equipment and transporter, the transformer must move on the opposite lanes of the interstates and cross the median at times to pass obstructions such as overhead signs and highway overpasses.
The new transformer is part of an upgrade to an existing power station and it will help KCP&L provide power to the Kansas City area, while reducing congestion along transmission lines.
