Former pastor charged with child sex crimes

JOHNSON COUNTY, MO (KCTV) -

A pastor who once led churches in Missouri is now accused in a slew of sex crimes.

It's been 15 years since Richard Seaton was pastor at Leeton United Methodist Church in Leeton, MO, and 15 years since the first victim contacted police.

There were numerous complications getting him charged, but he is now accused of sexual crimes involving five girls from three families over a six-year period when he was pastor in Missouri.

Leeton is a small town with just more than 500 people. It's located about 20 miles from Warrensburg, where the charges were filed against Seaton on Friday.

The charges against him were a long-time coming, partly because he left for Louisiana after his first interview with police in 1999. KCTV5's affiliate in Shreveport, LA, got video Friday night of police transferring him to jail.

The alleged assaults did not happen at the church, but at the rural home where Seaton lived at the time, the same time he was pastor at Leeton United Methodist Church. According to his website, he was "semi-retired" when he came to Leeton and founded an "after-school ministry."

The five victims, all girls, ranged in age from 8 to 16 at the time, a time when Seaton was in his 50s. The years of the accused crimes are between 1994 and 1999.

The victims came forward over time, from 1999 through 2009.

Johnson County Missouri Prosecutor Lynn Stoppy cited multiple reasons why it took so many years to assemble the case. Among them, that "There were family dynamics involved when the victims were still minors that made things difficult early on."

Stoppy did say the victims were not family members.

Before becoming a pastor in Leeton, Seaton was also a pastor in Sedalia, Platte City, Kansas City and Concordia, among others.
