ATCHISON, KS (KCTV) -

The Atchison Police Department had to say goodbye to one of their own.

Bear James Ross had been a K-9 police dog for seven years. Bear was also a member of the family for Tanna Ross, the animal control officer for Atchison, and her husband, an officer with the police department.

Bear died of renal failure from kidney disease.

"Bear James, worked his final shift yesterday, IV's and all," the animal control wrote in a Facebook post on Jan. 1

Bear was 9 years old. A memorial service was held Friday and he was laid to rest at the Sunset Memory Gardens, the new pet cemetery in Atchison.
