West Springfield considered for mitigation deal with MGM

Posted: Updated:

Progress was made Thursday between MGM and the city of West Springfield.

The city is now considered a surrounding community and eligible for a mitigation deal with the company.

Casino officials met with West Springfield Mayor Ed Sullivan.

"Most important thing for West Springfield was to secure a surrounding community designation," said Sullivan.

The city now joins Agawam, Chicopee, Ludlow, East Longmeadow and Longmeadow as surrounding towns to the possible future site of the MGM Springfield Resort.

Mayor Sullivan sat down one-on-one with CBS 3 Thursday night to discuss his meeting with the gaming company to get his city involved in the mitigation process.

"After discussions, they agreed to give that to us. There should be a letter waiting for me in the other room, so we're pretty pleased of the outcome with that," said Sullivan

In the past, West Springfield officials have voiced concerns over traffic and crime should a casino set up shop next door.

Sullivan said that will all be dealt with during the mitigation process.

"Well of course I mean, of course there's concerns, but I mean that's why there's discussions," said Sullivan

Ironically, with only a riverfront separating the two cities, West Springfield wasn't included as part of the original surrounding towns.

Sullivan said he's not sure why, but it was vital for his city's voice to be heard.

"I believe they realized there's some situations unique to West Springfield being so close to the casino and having the closest neighborhood to the casino," explained Sullivan.

Following the meeting, MGM issued a statement to CBS 3.

It said both the casino and the city will continue to work together, adding, "Based on today's discussions, we are confident that both sides are committed to coming to terms in the near future."
