Rintala murder retrial underway

Posted: Updated:
NORTHAMPTON, MA (WSHM) -

Opening statements were heard in the retrial of a Granby woman charged with murdering her wife.

Prosecutors said Cara Rintala, 47, killed her wife, Annamarie Cochrane-Rintala in their home back in March of 2010.

Authorities said the couple had a tumultuous relationship and had discussed divorce.

Assistant District Attorney Steve Gagne told the jury that because of the rocky relationship between the two women, the murder didn't happen out of the blue and the evidence points to one person.

"Their marriage ended not in the lawyers office, not in the court room, not in separation, none of those, it ended in murder," said Gagne.

He explained their violent relationship and how the police had been called to the home many times.

He also said the couple had issues with their daughter and finances.

"There were mounting financial pressures in the household, and under that roof between them a combined 90 some odd thousand dollars worth of debt," said Gagne.

Gagne also told the jurors that ultimately their decision will rely on the evidence, the law and their common sense.

Defense attorney David Hoose said investigators got the case wrong from the start.

"This is a case about an unconscious bias. It's about a bias and a mindset that crept into this case right from the outset, and tainted everything that followed."

Hoose said the police brought up the history of domestic violence between the two immediately and did not build a strong enough case against another suspect.

Hoose asked the jury to not let the state piece things together, but to listen to every detail for themselves.

Rintala's first trial ended this past March with a hung jury.
