Jury selection underway in 6-year-old's murder trial

Posted: Updated:

Jury selection is underway in the case of Michael Lawrence and co-defendant Rico Saldana.

The two are accused in a drive-by shooting that killed 6-year-old Lay'la Jones. The shooting happened in August of 2012 in Saginaw.

Police say Jones was struck by gunfire. She was taken to a local hospital, where she later died. She was in town visiting from Wisconsin.

Wednesday, a judge denied a request to separate the men's trials, after attorneys said defense strategies may conflict.

The judge also denied a motion to delay Lawrence's trial.

His attorney, Edwin Johnson, had asked for more time to prepare since being assigned to Lawrence just last month.

Instead, the judge agreed to remove Johnson and re-instate William D. White, who was representing Lawrence in the beginning.
