Two metro high school students have some big bragging rights. They've been selected for the 2014 High School Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall.
Christopher Chavez and Veronica Wood, who attend Olathe South High School and are members of the choir there, will be performing with the top voices selected from all over the world.
Of 10,000 hopefuls from around the world who auditioned for the 2014 High School Honors Choir, Chavez and Wood are two of the 155 teens who made it in.
"When I actually got chosen, I like melted because I always wanted to go to New York and I probably won't want to leave," Wood said with a laugh.
In February the Olathe South High School students will step off the stage they're used to and onto world famous Carnegie Hall, a venue that marks the pinnacle of musical achievement.
"Even performing on this stage is a rush, so performing in front of that many people will be insane," Wood said.
It's Chavez's second year being accepted.
"I kind of jumped around a bit," he said of when he was told the great news.
Their choir teacher nominated them. This is the third year Dr. Cindy Sheppard's students have made it in.
"They're getting to interact with students from a lot of different backgrounds. So not only is there that musical connection, there's also that connection with kids from so many different backgrounds. To me, that's just part of that whole educational experience," Sheppard said.
Besides singing with the best, they'll learn from the best conductors and also get a taste of the Big Apple. Above all, the program is helping the students realize their dreams of someday becoming professional performers.
"Just being on that stage will be like peering into the future hopefully," Wood said.
Both students auditioned for the choir in the fall. But they could use some help fundraising to get there. Contact their teacher at firstname.lastname@example.org if you'd like to help them out.
