KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A hotel in south Kansas City was evacuated Tuesday night after a water main break.

About 40 guests at the Crescent Hotel, located on Longview Road just off of Interstate 49, were evacuated.

The break happened about 6:20 p.m. and hotel staff began evacuating residents about an hour later after the basement filled up with about 2 feet of water.

A staff member said a pipe froze on one of the upper floors, causing water to back up and then burst, flooding the hotel.

Hotel staff evacuated everyone because they had to turn off power to the building.

Dozens of guests carried their belongings out of the building as police and firefighters inside worked to fix the problem.

"It's really bad. Even the elevator ... elevator opened and water was gushing down from above," officer Millie Gray said.

Some of the people staying at the hotel lived there, and management found them another place to stay the night. Travelers who were staying there received a refund.
