KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Police Chief Darryl Forte said a shooting that originally left the victim with critical injuries is now a homicide.

Officers were called to the 5800 block of Wilson Avenue, just north of Independence Avenue, about 1:30 p.m. on reports of a shooting. When they arrived, they found 21-year-old Donald Donato with life-threatening injuries to the west of a Price Chopper grocery store.

Shortly after 2 p.m., Forte said that Donato had died at the hospital and police were investigating the shooting as a homicide.

Police said a security guard at the Price Chopper detained a person until officers arrived.

"We also have a person of interest in custody, a male party who we will be investigating whether or not … making a determination if he's a suspect in the shooting," said Capt. Tye Grant.

There's no word on the connection, if any, between the shooter and the victim.

This is the third homicide of 2014.
