MARYVILLE, MO (KCTV) -

A Maryville, MO, high school student who has been in the headlines because of a rape investigation is in the hospital after trying to commit suicide.

Daisy Coleman's mother told the British newspaper the Daily Mail that Daisy is in the hospital recovering after the Sunday night suicide attempt, and that she has possible brain damage.

Her overdose came after the Daily Mail's online publication, MailOnline, said Daisy briefly attended a party Friday night and came home to abuse on her Facebook page from two girls who she had previously called friends.

The teen said she was sexually assaulted by at least two classmates and they left her in the freezing cold in January 2012.

Her story gained national attention when the hacker group Anonymous vowed to find her attackers and hold them accountable after most of the charges were dropped.

The Nodaway County Prosecutor turned the case over to Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters-Baker and asked her to be the special prosecutor to review the case.

Monday, Melinda Coleman, the girl's mother, wrote on her Facebook page, "Where is Anonymous now? My daughter has been terrorized to the point she tried to kill herself last night. She may never be OK. Where are you and your super hacking skills and internet help now.......we really need them."

She told MailOnline she wants the group to find the iPhone video of the alleged rape.

The group Anonymous responded to the accusations through its Twitter account (@YourAnonNews), saying "We're sorry that you have been robbed.

We hope that anyone, everyone, who has ever taken part in an op like this will step up now and fight for Daisy, because it's clear that the a******* who signed up for that job are getting paid for doing nothing."

It's KCTV5's policy not to report the names of sexual assault victims but, in this case, Daisy Coleman and her mother had hoped making their fight public would help bring her alleged attackers to justice.
