SMITHVILLE, MO (KCTV) -

A 20-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy are jailed after a man's tortured body was found at Smithville Lake.

The victim, 58-year-old Mark Thomas, of Liberty, was found dead early Sunday in a women's restroom at the lake with his ankles tied with jumper cables and a green plastic bag covering his head.

One of the two suspects arrested appeared in Clay County court on Monday.

Zachary Lisle has been charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping, robbery and armed criminal action.

"It doesn't seem like the guy I knew. Doesn't seem like Zach. Not at all. And I know Zach," Lisle's ex-girlfriend Ashley Conway said.

Conway still can't believe her ex-boyfriend could be responsible for the brutal attack.

She said he and a 16-year-boy arrested for the crime often hung out with the victim's son.

On Friday night, Conway said, they were at the victim's home when Thomas agreed to give the two boys a ride to her home.

But Thomas never returned. His vehicle was later found with large amounts of blood and a knife inside.

Police then found Lisle and his friend hiding at Conway's place on Saturday and arrested them.

"That's when I found out he was under the trailer. They were hiding out. I look out the window and my husband says cops were all over. And I looked out the window, and we were surrounded by police," Conway's mother Melba Conway said.

According to the court documents, during the attack in the restroom, the 16-year-old attempted to cut off Thomas' finger with a knife to get his gold ring off.

In a written statement to police, Lisle wrote that "the torture was senseless," referring to what they did to the victim.

"It could have happened to us too. We had no idea, and he could have done the same to us. It's very scary," Melba Conway said.

"Drugs play a part in everything. He's been on drugs before, and something's just not right," Ashley Conway said.

Authorities are waiting for lab tests to come back to determine if the suspects were high on drugs during the alleged crime.

Lisle's bond was set at $1 million. The 16-year-old in custody still has not been charged in juvenile court.
