Michigan residents are preparing for diving temperatures as they dig out from more than 15 inches of snow in places.
The National Weather Service says that as of Monday morning 16.2 inches of snow fell in Flint. About 10 inches of snow fell in the Saginaw/Bay City/Midland region. The Thumb received about 9 inches of snow.
TV5 Facebook friends are reporting some of the totals in their areas. Marie Munn says as many as 19 inches fell in Flushing. Wayne Turner says 17 inches fell in Caro. Jenifer Schmock-Slater says 15 inches fell in Columbiaville and Nathan Northrup says only 4 inches fell in Harrison.
15.5 inches fell north of Jackson, 15.4 inches fell at Howell and 15 inches was reported north of Battle Creek. In the Detroit suburb of Romulus, 10.2 inches was reported at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.
Snow wrapped up after starting Saturday or Sunday. Roads are slippery, with numerous crashes. A Dow Corning tanker tipped over after the driver lost control on Sunday. It happened near the Bay and Midland County border. Salzburg Road was closed while crews worked to clean up the accident. It's unclear if hazardous materials were in the truck at the time.
The Wind Chill Warning remains in effect until Wednesday morning as the cold air sweeps in.
In the southern Lower Peninsula, temperatures are to drop late Monday or early Tuesday as low as minus 15. Temperatures Monday morning are in the teens in Detroit. A reading of 22 degrees below zero was reported in the Upper Peninsula community of Ironwood.
TV5 Meteorologist Catherine Bodak says arctic air will surge into the area with gusty westerly winds. A few light snowflakes will linger as temperatures plunge into the single digits by this afternoon. This will be some of the coldest air to affect the region in possibly 20 years!
As the wind picks up, blowing and drifting snow will lead to poor visibly readings. A WIND CHILL WARNING is in effect through Tuesday evening. Dangerously cold wind chill values are expected to range between 20 and 40 degrees below zero during this time!
Hazardous travel conditions are expected and roads will be snow covered and slippery.
