LIBERTY, MO (KCTV) -
Friday was an emotional day in a Liberty courtroom as a former college football player was sentenced for lying to an underage girl about her age in order to solicit sex.
At 21 years old, Blake Brown will now spend the rest of his life on the sex offender registry. He's lost a scholarship to play football at William Jewell College. He'll serve five years probation and, if he breaks the conditions of the probation, he could spend four years in prison.
The judge's sentencing was an emotional blow for Brown's friends and family in the courtroom but, for others, it wasn't nearly enough. A group of mothers says there are more victims involved who never had their say.
"I am so disappointed. I really thought something else was going to be done," Tracey Sawyer said. "Jail time, anything other than he got a slap on the hand."
Sawyer is one of several mothers who say Brown tried to solicit sex from their underage daughters on Facebook. But Sawyer's case was never charged.
"Our daughters weren't even able to be heard," she said.
Brown's Friday sentencing at the Clay County Courthouse is for one separate charge of lying about his age to solicit sexual contact from a 13-year-old that he plead guilty to in October. He told her on Facebook that he was 18 when he was really 20. The two never met in person.
A spokesperson for the Clay County Prosecutor's Office said the investigation was thorough, that much of the contact Brown had with other girls was not criminal, and that there was not enough evidence to support more charges.
"You have the conversations right in front of you, how is that not enough proof?" Sawyer said.
Brown's friends and family spoke on his behalf before the sentencing. Through tears his mother said she blamed herself for not talking to him more about the consequence of social media.
That's one point where parents on both sides can agree.
"You just have to watch them," Sawyer said.
Brown's family and attorney did not want to speak on camera.
He was initially charged with attempted deviate sexual assault in 2012. Brown denied that and prosecutors pursued the age misrepresentation charges, saying they had stronger evidence there. Both were Class D felonies and the charges he pled to carry a mandatory lifetime on the sex offender registry, while the other did not.
