Berlin returns to public display, prepares for 'date night' with Nikita

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Berlin the polar bear returned Friday to public display at the Kansas City Zoo, and the hope is to renew her 'love connection' with Nikita in the coming weeks.

The 24-year-old polar bear has been off exhibit since last August when zookeepers were hopefull she was pregnant, and she was not tolerating the attention from the pesky Nikita well. The two bears mated last April.

A Kansas City-based beagle trained to detect whether polar bears are pregnant was called in. Sadly, the beagle named Elvis said that Berlin wasn't pregnant and has been proven correct.

Zoo keepers are giving Berlin access to the public areas and her behind-the-scenes bedroom. She was seen calmly exploring the area, pawing the snow and nibbling on treats.

In the coming days, zoo keepers will begin to reacquaint Berlin and her 7-year-old boyfriend. They will be separated but allowed to see and smell each other behind the scenes. If all goes well, eventually they could be nose to nose again and perhaps even on display together.

"Getting polar bears to 'HOWDY' is dictated completely by the two bears," the zoo said in a statement. "Careful observation and precautions will be taken during each step of this introduction process. While we hope for a quick Love me Tender success, it will not be rushed."

Continuing the Elvis theme, the zoo is hopeful that the two bears Can't Help Falling in Love Again.

You can see the polar bears, the penguins, the tropics and other animals at the zoo in covered areas from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
