Taxi companies gear up for New Year's Eve rush

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

New Year's Eve is synonymous with champagne toasts and levity, and more and more Kansas City residents put the keys away and rely on a taxi service to get them home safe and sound.

The days of free taxi rides on New Year's Eve are passe, and it's best to make your arrangements in advance. Transportation companies are gearing up for big demand. Yellow Cab and 10/10 Taxi will have more than 400 vehicles roaming area streets and highways come Tuesday night and early Wednesday.

"I'm kind of getting in battle mode," said Nancy Cipolla, spokeswoman for Yellow Cab and 10/10 Taxi. "We are all hands on deck ... We bring in a lot of extra staff so every phone and every computer is manned."

The penalties for driving while intoxicated and beefed up patrols by law enforcement have more and more revelers seeking a cab.

"You want to go out, you want to have a good time, but you need to be safe," Cipolla said.

The biggest demand is naturally when people head out to parties and then after the midnight toasts when they are ready to head home.

"It's very, very crazy, but we will get you picked up, it's just you have to be patient," Cipolla said.

So you should pack patience and be prepared for a long wait. The best advice is set up an RSVP early and have your phone near and answer it when your pickup time approaches. You can also text some companies.

A new company, DriveMeKC, is offering a flat rate on New Year's Eve. It's $46 for members and $61 for non-members. The ride must be within 9 to 25 miles.

It works by a driver giving you a ride home in your own vehicle with a second team member following to then pick up the designated driver at the person's destination.
