Former Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez makes retirement official

ATLANTA, GA (KCTV5) -

Former Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez made his retirement official on Monday.

Gonzalez, 37, is retiring after 17 years in the league. He was a first-round draft pick by the Chiefs in 1997. He was traded to the Atlanta Falcons on April 23, 2009.

He will almost certainly be added to the Chiefs Hall of Fame and the NFL Hall of Fame.

Gonzalez ranks second in career catches, fifth in yards receiving and sixth in touchdown catches. He played in 13 Pro Bowls. He owns NFL career records for tight ends with 1,325 receptions, 15,127 receiving yards, 111 receiving touchdowns and 31 100-yard receiving games. No NFL tight end ever put up such numbers, but Gonzalez hardly returned this year to pad his stats.

He craved playing in his first Super Bowl, winning a championship and making a legendary exit.

The Falcons, though, never had a chance. There was talk of the Chiefs trading for him in October, but it never came to be.

Gonzalez will return to his native California. A broadcast career is possible.

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt congratulated the man that fans affectionately call "Tony G."

"What he was able to accomplish during his time in the NFL is truly remarkable, and I have no doubt that Tony is a first-ballot Hall of Famer. We were very blessed to have him in a Chiefs uniform for 12 seasons, and his contributions on and off the field were extraordinary and will never be forgotten," Hunt said. "I want to thank Tony for his time in Kansas City and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors. He will always be considered a part of the Chiefs family."
