Special dogs need a special home

Posted: Updated:

Their names are Jonesy and Salty, a couple of pooch pals. Their story couldn't be more compelling.

Jonesy and Salty were rescued from a terrible hoarding situation in Oak Grove, MO, last June. They were two of 33 animals taken from the home. Thirty-one cats were removed, Jonesy and Salty were the only dogs.

Then there's this. Jonesy is blind and Salty has taken to being his personal seeing-eye dog. When Jonesy heads toward a wall, Salty heads him off. It's unselfish behavior they learned at home and have carried on at the shelter.

"These two dogs are the best of friends," said Rachel Hodgson, the communications manager for the Great Plains SPCA. "They are sweet, loving dogs and because they depend so much on one another, we'd really like to find them a home together."

They've have been in the Great Plains SPCA's Independence shelter since they were rescued.

Hodgson said they've been racking their brains trying to figure out a way to get the "senior" dogs, at eight-and-a-half years old, adopted. The longer they stay in the shelter, the harder it becomes.

"They've been in so long we recently put them with a foster family, so we could get 'em a little extra love," Hodgson told KCTV.

"I think there is just a connection between some dogs. They have empathy for each other," said Barbara Poe, the shelter's C.O.O.

No doubt, the two are a rag-tag pair.

It's hard not to notice Salty's skin condition.

"We've been working on it for quite some time and Salty will probably always have to deal with ear infections and some sort of antibiotic for his skin, and medicated baths and special food," Poe said.

Poe and Hodgson are hoping their story will get someone with a big heart to step forward and help with that. But, they're going together or not at all.

"This is a bonded pair, they go together or they stay in their suite here at Great Plains," Poe told KCTV5 News. "These dogs are going to give you, the new owner, so much in return that you are really going to give yourself a gift."

And, here's a bonus, one of the shelter workers has taken such a shine to Jonesy and Salty, she's paid the adoption fee, so adopting them will cost you nothing.

Jonesy and Salty have each other. All they need now is a home.
