LEE'S SUMMIT, MO (KCTV) -

An overnight fire forced a Lee's Summit man out into the cold.

Firefighters were called to the fire at 2:15 a.m. Thursday in the 100 block of Northeast Forest Avenue. The man told authorities that the second floor of his home was on fire.

When crews arrived, heavy smoke and fire was coming from the second floor and roof of the large, two-story, single family home.

Firefighters initially entered the home to attack the fire and confirm no one else was inside. But as conditions worsened, crews were removed from inside the home and firefighting operations were switched to a defensive mode from outside.

The fire was under control about an hour later.

Firefighters said the man was the only person inside the house, and he was not hurt.

The fire heavily damaged the second floor and collapsed the roof. The cause is under investigation.
