Family offers free hugs for Christmas

OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -

Christmas gifts don't have to cost a lot of money or require a ton of batteries.

Wednesday morning Brian Epsy and his two children decided to give out free hugs to anyone who would take one at the QuikTrip at 151st and Highway 69 in Overland Park.

Espy, who weathered personal challenges in his youth said he never misses a teaching moment about unconditional love for his two children. In a season filled with lights, glitter and consumption, he knows that many people struggle.

"Often you can't tell if people are having a difficult time during the holidays," Espy said. "Maybe they've experienced personal loss of a family member, a job or something else. The spirit of Christmas is giving, and what better way to break down walls and bring smiles to strangers' faces than with a free hug?"

The family offered the free hugs from 10 a.m. until noon. They hope to make it an annual tradition and next year they hope to have their mom join in. She had to work.
