Horses help spread holiday cheer in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Santa usually rides his sleigh pulled by reindeer on Christmas, but Wednesday in Kansas City Santa went with horses and a trailer.

"You're supposed to be nice and have fun on Christmas," said Darius Philips, one of the riders who helped Santa.

Philips is a member of the Show Me Riders Club. He and about a dozen other riders "hoofed it" from house to house near 27th Street and Prospect Avenue, helping Santa deliver his presents along with plenty of holiday cheer.

"This is just beautiful. We're right here in the inner city and everybody came down to see us. Look at all the beautiful horses," said a woman who saw the parade coming down her street.

"We contributed, got some donations from local businesses, put together some gift baskets and gave to the neighborhood," said rider Natasha Fuller.

Fuller helped organize the Show Me Riders in an effort to introduce children to horses. She said the animals are just part of what the group hopes to accomplish.

"It's like a catalyst. People see the horses and want to learn more. We use the horses to get attention and to get other things done too," Fuller said.

And, she said riding is a gift she wants to pass on.

"Learning how to ride a horse does so many things for kids. It boosts confidence and they have something other kids don't have," Fuller said.

Another rider, Marye Martin, said he can't think of a better way to spend Christmas.

"It's just fun, you get to have fun riding."

Riding, passing out presents and spreading holiday cheer, what can be better?
