KCK COPPS for Kids Christmas program makes wishes come true

KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

Imagine how tough it would be on Christmas morning to wake up and have no gifts for your child to unwrap. Some local police officers don't want that to ever be the case and made it so that more than 50 children in Kansas City, KS, got exactly what they wanted on their wish list.

Many people think about police officers going after bad guys, but a recent Christmas celebration hosted by KCK police was all about helping those who need it, like Kathy Bowman and her six grandchildren.

"I think they are amazing for doing this because usually we don't get expensive stuff so we're really thankful for it," said 10-year-old Melissa Crosby.

Bowman and her family have been through a lot. Her daughter, Toby Rock, was shot to death at the Homestead Suites in Merriam, KS, two years ago. Since then the grandmother has stepped into the mom role again.

"These kids deserve everything. Where I am at now in life, trying to adjust without their mom and stuff, it's hard," Bowman said.

She said she works long hours as a cook at McDonald's to support her grandchildren, but barely makes enough to make ends meet.

"When I get off work I am greeted by Melissa and she helps me walk in the house because my feet are usually swollen," Bowman said.

Police officers wanted to ease the burden for her and 18 other struggling parents, so they took them shopping and covered the bill. Volunteers wrapped each gift to make sure, instead of heartache this year, there would be lots of smiles on Christmas morning.

"We have parents working full-time and unable to give kids a Christmas, they just don't make enough money. They are paying rent, utilities and don't have extra. So we're happy that we are able to help them out," said Officer Kellee Ball.

Melissa said it was a wonderful experience she will never forget.

"Our Christmases have been really different without my mom and I am thankful for having the police do this for us," she said.

The program that puts this on is called COPPS for Kids Christmas. It is funded each year through generous donations from local Kansas City, KS, businesses.
