Community puts together soccer celebration for teen with cancer

INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -

Soccer isn't really a tradition at Christmas, but Tuesday night's match was about much more than the game. It was about one young man's fight against cancer and the community rallying around him.

The Elves of Christmas Present, the city of Independence, dozens of businesses and organizations and hundreds of volunteers across the Kansas City metro area secretly conspired to surprise the 16-year-old with an extraordinary gift for Christmas.

Nick Hibbeler is battling cancer, but still has a passion for soccer. So an entire event was created at the Independence Event Center as a ruse to provide a unique gift to the young man.

The special soccer celebration included former Wizards players, some of Hibbeler's high school teammates, family and friends.

Doctors hope the latest surgery and chemo got rid of all the cancer. Hibbeler's mom says the outlook is good and he hopes to be back to playing soccer next month.
