More people dining out for Christmas Eve, Christmas

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Santa wasn't the only one hard at work on Christmas Eve - the days surrounding this holiday are very busy for the restaurant industry.

Café Provence in Prairie Village, KS, was one of many restaurants in the metro keeping their doors open on Christmas Eve for hungry patrons too tired to cook. There is a growing demand for holiday dining.

Former Chiefs tight end-turned banking executive Walter White is a regular presence at Garozzo's on Harrison Street in Kansas City. He is in many pictures that hang on the wall of the popular Italian restaurant and on Christmas Eve he was holding court with family and friends in a private dining room.

"We eat at home a lot and this is a special evening so people like to get out tonight for Christmas Eve and eat dinner," he said.

White wasn't alone. Downstairs in the main dining hall hungry patrons chowed down on pasta. The kitchen staff worked tirelessly to keep up with the demand as diners continued to file into the restaurant.

"It's a very busy night and we've been open for about five years and it just keeps getting busier and busier, thanks to our patrons," said Chris Canzoneri of Garozzo's.

Across the state line in Lenexa, KS, Mafia Mike's Pizza appeared to be empty, but things were just getting started.

"The more people hear about us and know about us, they use us, especially in the holiday season like this," said Adam Carroll.

Carroll spent most of the day processing orders for delivery. He even hired extra drivers.

"My best guess is that they're preparing for holiday cooking tomorrow (Wednesday) and don't want to cook this evening," he said.

It's a holiday trend that shows no signs of slowing down.

Some restaurants in the Kansas City area said they would also be open on Christmas Day, although with limited staff and menu.
