LIBERTY, MO (KCTV) -

A group of Northland students are spreading holiday cheer to senior citizens in need.

Liberty North High School senior, Katelynn Downey, choose to donate gifts to a different group this Christmas.

The 17-year-old and the Liberty North student council are involved in a program called Be a Santa to a Senior.

"Some people that are kind of like forgotten around this time of the year, kids get presents from people they don't know," Downey said.

The students bought gifts for seniors at the Liberty Terrace Care Center, and instead of just leaving the gifts at the store, they thought it would be fun to pass out the gifts and spend some time with them.

The students partnered with Home Instead Senior Care to give over 100 blankets, slippers, and sleep wear - all the toys that seniors would enjoy.

"We recognize that there are a lot of great programs out there for families but Home Instead senior care saw that there weren't a lot of programs out there for seniors," said Steve Boos, owner of Home Instead Senior Care.

For 84-year-old Liberty Terrace resident Kay Tamburello, their students' gestures were wonderful.

"They are being very thoughtful of other people," she said.

"I know that they love this, because they see us, the staff, every day, but they don't get to see younger kids or people from the community.  So it means a lot to see that people from the community care about them," activity director Chelsea Green said.

The gifts are an added bonus, but Green says they real treat is the company.
