LEETON, MO (KCTV) -

The Humane Society of Missouri is investigating reports of starving, malnourished horses foraging for food in central Missouri.

It is a joint investigation with the Johnson County Sheriff's Office and animal welfare.

Officials are looking into the animal abuse claims on Southeast 1250 Road near Southeast 771st Road after receiving a few reports in recent weeks.

The reports claim the horses were not adequately cared for and had very little to eat.

KCTV5's Dave Jordan spoke with a caretaker for the horses and the man who hired him.

They deny claims of animal abuse and mistreatment, but declined to comment any further because the investigation is ongoing.

KCTV5 also reached out to an attorney but haven't heard back.
