Abused dog Andra Grace, puppies head north to foster homes

Posted: Updated:

A dog who gained national attention after witnesses said she was dragged behind a truck in Greenville County has healed significantly and is headed to her new home.

Andra Grace was picked up by Courtney Bellew, with Special Needs Animal Rescue Rehabilitation (SNAAR) Northeast from Upstate Veterinary Specialists Hospital in Greenville Friday along with her puppies.

Bellew is taking the dogs back to New York with her where they will be cared for in foster homes. She said two doctors are fostering Andra Grace in a home with kids and other dogs where she will get "great care."

Since Andra Grace was found injured, she has had a lot of medical treatments but is doing really well, Bellew said. She said Andra Grace's wounds have not been infected and she is really active.

When Andra Grace was first brought in, the doctors didn't know if she would pull through.

"It's just amazing to me that… how everybody sort of banded together and how people from all over the world are pulling for this dog," Bellew said. "And I think she knew it and she totally pulled through and now, she gets to start her new life, which is just amazing."

Andra Grace had a total of seven puppies, five which were recovered but one did not survive. Bellew said the four survivors were named Abigail, Maxwell, Sully and Oliver, and are all doing great.

They did undergo extensive care since they were rescued, Bellew said. She said they will also be fostered in New York, but at a different home than Andra Grace so she can focus on her own recovery.

Once the puppies are healthy and ready, Bellew said they will be up for adoption.

A Greenville County man was charged in connection with Andra Grace's abuse, according to deputies. After an initial citation, Roger Owens was charged with felony ill treatment of animals on Tuesday.
