Human remains found in central MO

MONTGOMERY CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The Missouri State Highway Patrol has launched an investigation after human remains were found in central Missouri.

The patrol said in a release Friday that a human bone fragment was found near the Missouri River. The patrol did not specify where or when the fragment was found.

Capt. Sarah L. Eberhard, director of the patrol's Division of Drug and Crime Control, said the patrol is investigating with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office and the Gasconade County Sheriff's Office.

KCTV5 also spoke this evening with Sergeant Kevin Hunter with the Missouri Highway Patrol. Hunter confirmed the fragment was found west of Hermann. He said the case is being looked into, and could be anything from something that warrants a major criminal investigation to part of a body that was washed out of a graveyard following heavy rains and flooding.

Hunter said the fragment is in the lab for tests to uncover its approximate age, which will help investigators determine their next steps.
